What’s the Difference Between An Index & A Codex Book?
In Warhammer 40k, codexes and indexes play different yet complementary roles, especially when the game transitions between editions.
Codex Book:
- Think of a codex as the ultimate guidebook for a specific faction or army. It’s packed with detailed background lore, stunning artwork, and all the rules and datasheets you need to play that faction.
- Each codex is loaded with special rules, warlord traits, stratagems, psychic powers, and other goodies to enhance both the theme and gameplay.
- When a new codex drops, its rules become the new standard, wiping out any previous versions, including those in the index.
Index Book
- An index is more of a temporary fix, especially handy at the start of a new edition when many codices haven’t been updated yet.
- It offers basic rules and datasheets so players can still field their armies until the new codex arrives.
- The content in an index is more generic and less detailed than a codex.
- As new codices are released, the rules in those codices replace the ones in the index.
In short, the index keeps the game rolling smoothly during transitions, while the codex brings a faction to life with enriched, updated rules once it’s ready to roll out.
Index Cards Vs. Datasheets
In Warhammer 40k, datasheets and indexes are the dynamic duo providing essential info about units and rules. Here’s the lowdown:
Datasheet Cards:
- Think of datasheets as individual player profiles. They detail everything about a specific unit – from stats and weapons to special abilities. Whether it’s a squad of Space Marines or a beefy tank, each unit gets its own datasheet with all the juicy details on how it operates on the battlefield.
- Datasheet card packs are available while supplies last when a new codex book (like the T’au Empire) is released.
Index Cards:
- Index cards are like compilation albums, with datasheets for various units from a particular faction or army. These sets serve as a handy reference, giving players all the necessary info about their army’s units.
- They’re the stopgap heroes, stepping in with the info you need until the official codex for each faction drops.
- Index Cards cover a specific faction or a subset of factions, making it easy for players to find the rules and profiles for their armies in one place.
So, while datasheet cards give you the nitty-gritty on each unit after the codex releases, index cards compile all that info into a convenient package, holding down the fort until the codices arrive!

Perfect Fit: Re-Formatted 10th Edition 40k Index Cards for Hassle-Free Printing
GW confirmed the actual size of the cards is 190 x 126mm, which is bigger than the existing AoS warscroll cards and is the actual print size of the free pdf downloads (roughly one per standard printer paper size).
This means printing out your entire army of cards will take up all kinds of paper and ink and may be hard to carry around!
With over 100 cards for certain armies (we’re looking at you, Space Marines Index), the existing sizes from GW could make this worse than carrying codexes around!
Magic-sized Index Cards for Warhammer 40k 10th Edition
This is the stack of just Imperial Guard cards! Imagine having to carry this around as one full page per unit; it would be just as big or more than the codex.
If you want to play something like Space Marines Index, this is about half the amount you would need. Not to mention, if you play a specific chapter, like Blood Angels, then it could get even crazier!
You’ll have to do a little work and cut them out yourself, but it’s much easier than what we currently have from Games Workshop. However, if you want them a little bit bigger, there is a set of downloads for that too.

10th Edition 40k Index Datacards Formatted Two Per Page
You can also make your own from the Warhammer 40k Datasheet PDF Converter, which lets you upload the index PDF and convert them to a printable two or four-page format.
If the Magic card size is too small, this two and four-per-page format is also available. While they won’t fit in sleeves as efficiently, they are bigger and easier to read.
This might not be a bad option if you’re playing one of the smaller armies. Something like the Chaos Knights index is condensed down to only ten pages.
