Warhammer New Year’s Preview should reveal the 2027 40k codex roadmap, new factions, and what’s next for Age of Sigmar.
After a pretty strange year of preview shows, Games Workshop has one very obvious card left to play once 2026 wraps up: tell everyone what comes next.
That’s especially true for Warhammer 40k. GW has already confirmed that Adeptus Custodes will be the final codex release of 2026, leaving the rest of the 11th Edition schedule hanging with a whole lot of blank spaces.
More importantly, during its Autumn Preview Q&A, Games Workshop said a new codex roadmap is coming in the new year and even suggested it could show up during the next preview.
So, GW has a pretty clear list of things it could finally put on the table with the 2027 New Year’s Preview.
Will There Be a Warhammer New Year’s Preview?
The Previous 2026 New Year’s Preview
GW looks to be moving to four big previews a year, so we do expect another New Year’s Preview based on their Q&A and the ones from previous years, just maybe not with as many minis as the Autumn Preview. Games Workshop already used that to unveil one of the biggest Age of Sigmar releases in a while: the new Khazalite Holds faction. That reveal included their Army Set, Hjulda Drakkblud, Clanshields, artillery, Gholems, and confirmation that more kits will follow.
For Warhammer 40k, meanwhile, the final stretch of 2026 is already pretty well defined. Adeptus Custodes closes out the codex schedule, and GW has directly said there won’t be another new codex until 2027.
That makes this preview feel less like a place for surprise 2027 releases and more like the starting gun for next year. And honestly, that could make it a lot more useful for everyone.
The 2027 Warhammer 40k Codex Roadmap Is the Big One

Rather than teasing another codex that won’t arrive for months, GW could use the New Year’s Preview to show several factions at once and give players at least a rough idea of how the first half of 2027 is going to shake out. That doesn’t necessarily mean exact release dates either, becasue we know Games Workshop loves its vague seasonal windows. However, even something like “Winter,” “Spring,” and “Summer” would give players a much better idea of what armies are next too.
11th Edition will be about 6 months old by the end of the year, and the vast majority of armies still don’t have books, while the ones that do are proving to be incredibly overpowered in the 40k meta tier list. Which is precisely why a roadmap reveal would be the biggest piece of actual news GW could drop.
Christmas Battleforces Are Still the Safe Bet

So yes, Battleforces should once again be somewhere around the winter reveal cycle, most likely this month in October even. The bigger question is which armies make the cut, and there have been rumors already floating around about which ones may make it. GW has already released several non-Christmas Battleforces during 2026, including boxes for Astra Militarum, Tyranids, Necrons, Space Marines, and all four major Chaos God-aligned Legions.
Still, the basic formula probably isn’t changing. Expect a handful of 40k armies, another group for Age of Sigmar, and enough savings to make everyone suddenly reconsider the army they swore they weren’t starting.
Age of Sigmar Has a Different Problem
Age of Sigmar isn’t waiting for its big new-faction reveal anymore. GW already pulled that trigger with the Khazalite Holds during the Big Autumn Preview. Their first Army Set is coming with Hjulda Drakkblud, Clanshields, a cannon, Gholems, and their battletome, with additional kits planned afterward.
That leaves the New Year’s Preview with a different job. Right now, there isn’t much of a long-term Age of Sigmar roadmap sitting in public view beyond the releases GW has already previewed. That makes a fresh battletome roadmap a pretty reasonable possibility.
Even a handful of faction icons would give AoS players something to work with, especially if GW plans to start lining up the next wave of battletomes and game system reboot for 2027.
Don’t Expect Every Game to Get a Massive Reveal

Either way, the New Year’s 2027 Preview could still include Kill Team, Horus Heresy, The Old World, Necromunda, or whatever else Games Workshop wants to squeeze into the stream, but 40k and AoS already have some pretty obvious unfinished business heading into 2027.
Final Thoughts From Us: Warhammer New Year’s Preview 2027
The Warhammer New Year’s Preview 2027 probably doesn’t need some earth-shattering Primarch reveal to be interesting. At this point, Games Workshop giving players an actual look at 2027 would be plenty for sure.
Basically, this preview may be less about what GW can sell everyone after the holidays and more about giving players a reason to start planning armies in the New Year. And with most of the 11th Edition codex lineup still waiting in the wings, there’s plenty for Games Workshop to put on that roadmap as well.
