Frontline Gaming ITC has released their polished rules set for using chess clocks during games. Let’s look at why they’ve come to putting people on the clock and how it’ll affect gameplay.

The rules have been up for a while now but we wanted to aim folks at the polished Chess Clock pack to make sure we can get more feedback and get folks used to using them for events that decide to implement them.

Why Use Clocks?

Chaos Cultist

Some events may soon go to using clocks because most competitive armies are running over 200 models like Cultists, Guard, Orks, etc. Even now players bring an astronomical amount of units and gob up the board until the game ended (usually on turn 3) and they eventually won.

Instead of placing a model/unit cap on things, events may now bring in the clock. Time starts as soon as the pre-game begins and ends at the end of each of the player’s turn.

There are some exceptions to the rule of course. There’s no time penalty if you’re making saving throws, leadership checks, or getting out of vehicles. The clock is still brutal, however. If a player decides to charge a unit and runs out of time, he can’t attack. But the other player may choose to attack back freely.

Is This a Good Idea?

90% of horde type armies are going to say it’s a bad idea but it seems like it’s pretty solid. There’s going to be a clock judge at every table now so instead of trying to fight the time, outsmart it. Bring movement trays if you need to. Or instead of bringing every Cultist and their mom to the table, maybe bring a tank or two.

Frontline Gaming thought outside of the box by switching up the game with a clock. Now that we will be seeing clocks more in the future, why don’t you test it for yourself? Download a chess clock APP on your phone and try it out with your friends.

There’s going to be variable game-times at these events so just pick an amount of time you both think is appropriate and playtest.

What do you think about clocks at events? We need a horde army player and an elite army player’s opinion here for sure!
