Squidmar Miniatures is bringing you hobby fanatics another tutorial on how to make desert bases. Whether it’s for Warhammer or Dungeons & Dragons, Emil will show you the way.
Emil is switching it up with some basing tips and tricks for desert-themed miniatures. Making desert bases can be done very quickly; it all depends on the drying time!
Desert basing doesn’t have to be hard, and Emil will show you the quickest and best way to paint a desert base.
To start off, Vallejo White Pumice is used to shape a sand dune base. You can even use your pinky finger to shape more fine sand dunes. Once your pumice is dried, paint it up with Vallejo Brown Sand. At this point, you can add some Woodland Scenics grass tufts to really capture a desert feel.
Next, get some Vallejo Pigment paint to create the desert sand. Place some Matt Varnish all over your painted base, and add pigment until you get an even spread. Use a completely dry paintbrush to allocate the pigment until the base is completely covered.
To add another layer of immersion, paint the border of the base with a red-brown. Citadel Seraphim Sepia works great and will focus the eye towards the center of the base. This showcases your model even further on your base.
