Out of the entire Citadel paint line, there are some that have proven to be more useful than others. Some paints can be used to pull off extremely unique details on the model bringing it a step above. With that said, GW has discontinued a whole multitude of paints since Contrast’s release. Since this has happened, the price has shot up on the stock that people might have in their hobby holes.

It looks like these are so desirable, people don’t mind paying really good money for them.

Glaze paints are one of the paint categories that GW discontinued. These paints came in the normal paint pot that you’d expect from a Base or a Layer. However, it looks like some paints are going for extremely high prices on the secondary market. A normal paint pot this size sells on GW’s site for $4.55. Just look at the mark-up of what’s already been sold for $30-$40.

While Lamentors Yellow is peaking at the highest end of the spectrum for prices, other glazes like Waywatcher Green have also shot up a decent amount. You could essentially buy three glazes back in the day for the price of one Waywatcher Green or Guilliman Blue now.

Washes & Primers Spiking in Price

devlan mud wash

Even the classic wash, Devlan Mud is selling for multiple times its original cost. In the wake of all the bigger paint pots and colors, people still have a need for older paints like Devlan Mud. Is this a sign GW should bring the old stuff back for a bit? At least to let everyone stock up?

Looking at the canned primers, these are the paints that GW also discontinued earlier this year in the Contrast Paint wave.

Normally, GW sells rattle can primer sprays for about $20. However, in the secondary market for discontinued sprays, these are going upwards of $50+!

It seems like there’s definitely a demand for the old paints as they’re better than others for some armies. The Fang is perfect for Space Wolves and Caliban Green for Dark Angels, for example. Take a look at what kind of paints you might have sitting around. If you find some glaze paints you didn’t even know you had, why not flip it and generate some more hobby $$$!

What are your thoughts on these price jumps for discontinued paint? Do you use glaze paints regularly? Is Contrast just a worse version of a glaze?
