Detachments are look lit in the new edition- check out all the new rules for Warhammer 40k 9th Edition for making armies now.
Updated detachments and their bonus rules are here for Warhammer 40k! Some of the detachments we’ll be going over were spotted on imgur. Meanwhile, other detachments have also been previewed by GW on WHC over the past week or so.
If you’re curious about how many detachments you can bring for your game size, check this out.
9th Edition 40k Full Detachments Rules Are Lit
We’ll be going over all of the detachments that have been previewed officially by GW in earlier days to start with.
The Battalion Detachment is just like the current Battalion in 8th. However, we’ve seen that detachment now COST CP rather than give CP. If your Warlord is in a Detachment, they’ll be refunding the cost of that detachment, however, so most of us should only be losing out on about 3-6CP per game. bringing a Battalion also unlocks Dedicated transports for each Infantry unit.
For the Patrol detachment, it’ll cost 2CP and your Warlord will refund you the two CP back. However, if you’re taking something that costs more (like a Battalion) it only makes sense to throw your Warlord in there.
In 8th Edition, a Super Heavy Auxiliary costs 1CP to unlock. In 9th, it’ll cost you a whopping 3CP and even if that LOW is your Warlord, he won’t refund you the CP.
For Knight/Baneblade/ other big model players, a Super-Heavy Detachment is going to cost up to 6CP to field. If you run something small like an entire detachment of Armigers, then you’ll only need to pay 3CP. But anything with the Titanic keyword doubles the cost.
Once again, even if your Warlord is in this detachment, no CP will be refunded. That’s the price you have to pay if you want to meta stomp with T8 spam.
For the final detachment that got the official preview spotlight, there’s the Supreme Command detachment. Instead of fielding multiple HQs and a LOW, you can only bring One HQ OR LOW. Restricting things further, they can only be a Primarch, Daemon Primarch or Supreme Commander (which may be someone like Abaddon). On the bright side, even though you have to throw someone like Roboute in this detachment, he’ll still refund your CP for whichever your most expensive core detachment is.

Vanguard detachments are structured the same but will cost 3CP. Your Warlord won’t refund CP here.
The Spearhead is in the same weightless. You’ll need 3CP to unlock the detachment and your Warlord won’t refund you anything if he’s in here.
The Outrider is the same as the two previous detachments from above.
For Fortification detachments, you’ll need at least one fortification (which by the way, Necrons and Space Marines just had theirs revealed). It costs 1CP but if the fortifications in the detachment are from the same faction as your Warlord’s detachment then the Fortification detachment is basically free.
Another neat thing that we’ll have available to us as a potential detachment is the Auxiliary Support detachment. This costs two CP but lets you take one of anything (aside from a LOW) in your army. Paying 2CP for one unit slot is pretty steep so we probably won’t see this used too much. However, it’s nice to at least have in our back pocket if we make a weird list.
At the end of the day, we’ll probably be seeing at least one Battalion taken in every list. It unlocks so many potential unit slots and your Warlord will refund the CP for you.

What do you think about the new detachment rules? Will you be taking a single core detachment in your 2k list to get as much CP as possible? Or will you be spending it left and right to take units like Knights?
