From Combat Patrol to Start Collecting, Vanguard, and Battleforce box sets, there are still a ton of releases out there with decent value inside to start a new Warhammer army for the New Year (or just add to your existing forces).

These are geared towards starting a newer army, but they all save you some cash, which we all love. We’ll also break down the value of each; that way, you can decide if any of them are worth your hard-earned hobby dollars.

Best of all, we just updated all the pricing and values for Combat Patrols to the new GW Suggested Retail Prices that increased in February 2022.

The Thousand Sons one is pretty similar to the Hexfire box, so if you grabbed that one this might still have some value for you. It is a little strange just because it has so many Tzaangors and it’s basically the same as the Hexfire box but with 10 more Tzaangors added in.

Following on from the events of Shadow Throne, the perfidious Genestealer Cultists and the Talons of the Emperor are mustering Combat Patrols to continue their respective missions across the Imperium. You’ll be able to prepare for these campaigns with Codex: Adeptus Custodes and Codex: Genestealer Cults, which are both packed full of thematic rules like devastating crossfire, and peerless battle stances.

If you need the Sisters models, this box is a good buy, but if not, it may be a pass. Let’s check out what this will save you:

This is a decent box with some good units but is very jetbike-heavy, so if you don’t want any in your army, this probably isn’t for you.

Still, we assume there will be decent value inside, but we’ll break it down below. Let’s see what value you can expect, but remember that the boxes have gone up $10 from the original $140. So we’ll use that as the price point.

Fortunately, the Norn-Queens have been hard at work splicing together a new Combat Patrol box, which is ideal whether you’re brand new to the Tyranids or have been on board since Hive Fleet Behemoth was first sighted.

The box actually has some useful units and minis inside, so this could be a good starting point for players. Let’s see what type of cash it will save you, though.

The daemonic onslaught intensifies, with a Combat Patrol set focused on Khorne. Get the blood flowing with this hefty collection of 34 miniatures, which can be built to reach a Power Level of up to 33 and get you gaming straight away. This Combat Patrol-sized force is led by a fearsome Bloodmaster, ably supported by three Bloodcrushers mounted on Juggernauts, 10 slavering Flesh Hounds, and 20 Bloodletters – making a spectacular basis for a Khornate horde.

Now moving to more exclusively Daemon models, this new combat patrol is a great start for any fans of Khorne’s Daemonic forces. However, this one may not be for you if you’re not collecting skulls in your Daemon army.

Fyreslayers Vanguard Box

26 hot-headed miniatures. Including a hero and battleline – form a fiery core to this force. A Battlesmith chronicles the stories of the Fyreslayers to lead 20 axe-toting Vulkite Berzerkers and five ferocious Hearthguard Berzerkers – who can be built instead as the indomitable Auric Hearthguard.

Idoneth Deepkin Vanguard

This raiding party consists of 15 miniatures. With a hero and battleline meaning you can use it as an army in a box. Hard-hitting eyeless Namarti Thralls are guided by the mystical prowess of an Isharaan Soulscryer, backed up by a fierce Akhelian Allopex and a trio of eel-riding Akhelian Isharaan Guard, which can also be built as Morrsarr Guard for extra flexibility.

Vanguard: Daughters of Khaine

Fresh from giving the Nighthaunt the fight of their lives in the Arena of Blood boxed set, the Daughters of Khaine are heading right back into the thick of things with their long-awaited Vanguard box. This box contains five Blood Stalkers, five Doomfire Warlocks, 10 Witch Aelves, and a Melusai Ironscale to lead them. It’s both the perfect place to start a Daughters of Khaine army and a valuable collection of powerful units to bolster an existing force – all while saving money.

This isn’t bad value at all, and only a little less than the recent Fyreslayers’ box. So, if you need the units inside, you basically get the Blood Stalkers for free. Even if you already have some units, the nice thing about this box is there are actually useful units inside, so should be a decent pickup.

Vanguard: Skaven

Not to be outdone, the Skaven have concocted their own Vanguard box. It’s packed with verminous minions to boss around – a Grey Seer leads a pack of 20 Clanrats, supported by three hulking Stormfiends and the awesome technological might of a Warp Lightning Cannon. Whether you’re starting a new army or adding to your swarm, this is a collection of powerful and volatile weapons – with a furred horde ideal for occupying unwitting targets while your gunners lock on.

Unfortunately, the Skaven doesn’t grab a great box. While the minis inside are useful, this is one of the lowest values we’ve seen in a while. Still, if you need all of the minis inside, it’s still cheaper than buying them on their own, and you basically get the Clanrats for free.

Vanguard: Nighthaunt

Rising from their graves to reignite their war against the living, the Nighthaunt come prepared with a Vanguard box full of spectral soldiers. With a grim hero leading an otherworldly battleline, this is a great way to start a new army – or reinforce an existing one. 20 groaning Chainrasps flow across the battlefield in a wave of incorporeal death, while 10 Grimghast Reapers, three Spirit Hosts, and a macabre Knight of Shrouds set to stripping fresh souls from their victims.

Now, this box has some great value! Almost as good as we’ve seen, so if you need the minis included, this is a buy every time. Plus, the Chainrasps are still push-fit, so building this box shouldn’t be too hard.
