From the looks of these rumors, Warhammer 40k index cards are here to stay for 10th Edition and maybe longer…
With how GW set up the new unit and army rules in 10th Edition, the index cards can show you pretty much everything for a unit in one spot. However, some people still prefer the older style datacards, where they also have all the individual cards for the stratagems and such.
If you’re one of those people, you might be out of luck, as there are some big rumors and indicators of index cards being the way of the future.
RUMORS: 10th Edition 40k Index Cards are Here to Stay
Reliable insiders hint that Games Workshop might be introducing a revamped “index card” system in place of the previous datacard packs that will be available to purchase when each of the new Codexes release, starting with the Tyranids.
GW put out the index cards for every faction at the beginning of the 10th Edition, but there have already been (and will be more) changes to the cards. Fortunately, updates so far are free online via PDF downloads.
However, from the rumors out there, it looks like Index Cards will stick around after the Codex book start releasing, and they will be much more official. They might also be a way to get the rules cheaper than buying a $60 codex, but updates (FAQ, errata, etc.) will only be downloadable for the affected cards.)
Currently, each of the 10th Edition index card packs has an individual code on the bottom of the sleeve that may even be used to unlock contents on the Warhammer app with the paywall goes up (so dont throw yours away!)
The current index cards ran from $15-$25, and we would suspect the cards could be more for each faction when their codex drops depending on size and the content covered. Either way, though, if this rumor is true, and you can buy the index cards and get access to all the rules on the app, this is way cheaper than buying a $60 Codex book!
So, whether you like the index cards or not, there’s a chance this actually saves some hobby dollars in the long run if you only buy the index cards. GW confirmed the actual size of the cards is 190 x 126mm, which is bigger than the existing AoS warscroll cards. So, they are much bigger than the data cards and a little challenging to sleeve.
However, this seems to be the way of the future, and, honestly, if they give you the cards for detachment rules, stratagems, and enhancements, this is probably just easier.
