The 10th Edition Warhammer 40k Leviathan matched play packet is here to standardize all the terrain layouts and tournament play!
While some tournaments have been coming up with some of their own rules and banning armies, it’s nice to see GW taking an active approach to tournaments. We’ll have to see which tournaments use this packet, but for now, it seems pretty well laid out. There are also some changes to missions, meaning even if you aren’t planning on playing any tournaments, you should check out the changes to those cards.
10th Edition Warhammer 40k Terrain Layout Leviathan Matched Play Packet
The new 10th Edition Warhammer 40k Leviathan matched play packet comes from Warhammer Community.
Then there’s also the small matter of the Leviathan Tournament Companion, which the guys spend a while discussing. This is the last word on matched play in the new edition.
They mention in the video this isn’t just for their tournaments or GTs; it should be a good companion for anyone running a tournament who needs some help and even has advice inside for newer TOs.
Obviously, you can’t just have players pick their own missions throughout the tournament, so you’ll have pre-set missions. If you use the terrain setups they recommend, it should make for a pretty balanced game.
They also talk quite a lot about getting players used to the missions so they do not have to focus on them as much and can have a more engaging play experience. Hopefully, they have done that!
10th Edition 40k Terrain Layouts
As with almost every tournament, the tables should be set up with fairly similar terrain and not give a huge advantage to one side or another. Interestingly, they note that ruined walls should leave one side open and not fully enclose buildings or ruins.
Again, the objectives differ in 10th, meaning you can’t put them on walls, and miniatures can’t stand on them.
Layout 1
They have a few different layouts, but they are all pretty symmetrical and, even with so much space in the middle, have plenty of LOS blocking. This layout has the most in the middle, with the edges being pretty dry of terrain. However, other than the center, there are plenty of firing lines.
40k Terrain Layout 2
The second layout has a lot less around the center of the battlefield but more direct firing lines. This means you want to get your models into the right firing lines before your enemy, or you might just get shot off the board before you can take those precious objectives.
40k Terrain Layout 3
This has the most open feel of the bards yet. However, with the two main ruins turned at an angle, they block a decent amount, and if you can get units into them, they will be able to shoot over most of the battlefield.
40k Terrain Layout 4
Last but not least, this blocks off two corners almost completely. If you happen to get a deployment with one corner, you can really save a ton of your miniatures from enemy shooting. Then, keep sneaking up, which might make this a great style for combat armies.
Tips on Setting Up Games
This should be helpful for TOs, as sometimes matching people up can be a bit of a hassle. They also don’t recommend using VP as a way to determine the overall victors or for pairing. We’ll have to see what tournaments end up using.

Updated Leviathan Mission Cards
It’s nothing huge, but there are also exciting changes to actual VPs and scoring for these 10th Edition missions. However, it’s always good to know what’s changing, as they are mainly decreasing the VP given for these secondaries.
