How to Paint Horus Heresy Emperor’s Children Legion: Tutorial

Emperor's Children how to 2We’re going to go for a Grimdark look here that can be achieved by all skill levels! Let’s see how to do it.

Step 1:

Emperor's Children how to 3To start, he sprays the model black then does a zenithal highlight with Opaque White from above. Just make sure to get some good highlights here.

Next up, he breaks out Sunset Purple but is very thinned down and hits the armor. You want these coats to be nice and light. After that, he puts the Opaque white back in the airbrush and does some quick spot highlights on the tops of the armor.

Step 2:

Emperor's Children how to 4Next up is Shyish Purple in about a 50/50 mix with thinner. This is a very light layer for the shadows, so be sure to only use it there to create more depth. And go from the shadows to the mid-tones.

Step 3:

Emperor's Children how to 5Now it’s time to move to the brush. He starts with Dark Aluminium for any of the silver areas and Necro Gold for all the gold and the shoulder pads. Try to be as neat as you can here because you don’t want to redo the purple! Next, he does Nuln Oil on the silver and Agrax Earthshade on the gold. Then, he goes back and does all the silver on the gun.

Step 4:

Emperor's Children how to 6Next up is the weathering. To do this he simply takes a little of the silver on a sponge and presses it onto the bolter and armor where he feels appropriate. After that, he does the eyes with Lupercal Green and then finishes them off with a highlight of Sol Yellow.

Decals:

For this, he uses Micro Sol & Set. For this, you put the decals in warm water until it comes off the sheet, he then puts the Micro sol on the piece and once it’s on, he uses a Q-tip and the Micro Set to smooth out any of the irregularities. Super simple. Just be sure to gloss varnish before this step! Just be sure to let this sit for about 3 hours.

Finished Model

Emperor's Children how to 8Overall this took him about 45 minutes, so not bad at all to get some great-looking marines!
