Amid tons of resin kits going to plastic or disappearing forever, Forge World isn’t going anywhere anytime soon; here’s why.
It looks like Games Workshop is making changes in the opposite way for once with Forge World. Pretty much everything up until now, GW has been trying to shoehorn Forge World in with their normal Web store. However, with these recent developments and announcements, it looks like they aren’t going anywhere soon.
Also, it only makes sense for them to keep resin around for limited-run products, quick turnaround items, and things that just aren’t worth the costs of injection molding.
Don’t Worry; Forge World Isn’t Going Anywhere Now
Here’s why they aren’t going away. Resin is still the easiest way to kick out minis in large one-off batches (think Strike Me Down from AMG) than doing conventional plastic injection molding. For larger print runs, plastic is better, as we’re seeing, and it’s still the go-to for larger kits.
In smaller runs, “hybrid” plastic/resin kits like the new Mastodon, Fell Blade chassis vehicles, etc., seem to be holding strong. It’s probably far easier for GW to just produce plastic weapon sprues instead of constantly making new molds for those smaller bits that burn out molds faster.
It’s also perfect for upgrade bits, whole resin kits (like the legion-specific stuff we have seen), or larger titans and monsters that just dont sell as much as other models within those factions.
While some people are still having issues with some Forge World products, that’s not an inherent problem with the resin. They simply need to get their Quality Control back within acceptable tolerances.
On the marketing side, Games Workshop has gone and even rebranded them back on their site with banners on faction pages. This means we might see them pushing people to Forge World as more of an upgrade purchase instead of just buying everything on GW’s main webstore, as we have seen in the past.
This contradicts their soft “rebranding” of Forge World items on their site alongside regular plastic model kits.
GW Liquidates Tons of 40k Models & Forge World to Legends
After Games Workshop announced a ton of last chance to buy and models moving to Legends for Forge World ahead of the release of 10th edition, they indicated what the future would hold for Forge World:
Certain Forge World products have already left the range – but people who own them will still get to use them with updated Legends rules.
There will still be Forge World units for Warhammer 40,000, but the focus for them will be on the really big stuff – like Titans, and other kits that we can’t reasonably produce at that scale (yet!).
It also seems like Forge World will become the place to get larger, more elaborate miniatures for factions. However, it may only be a matter of time until everything becomes plastic, as the Cerastus Knights are next up to be offered in multi-part plastic goodness.
This, again, seems to indicate that Forge World, as its own brand and separate entity, is here to stay. As we said, if they are willing to spend the time to rebrand and send people to the FW site to buy minis, the company is not going anywhere anytime soon.
