GW Confirms Best & Worst 40k 10th Edition Armies in the Meta Right Now

GW released a 10th Edition Warhammer 40k Metawatch Dispatch, which looks at the winner of the Tacoma Open, the best and worst armies now!

There’s been a lot of talk about the power level of factions in 10th Edition Warhammer 40k, how the meta is shaping up, and if the game is balanced. While this is based on one event, there were over 300 games, and the winner might not be the faction everyone expected.

Obviously, after people looked at the index cards, some factions were a little over-represented, and some didn’t show up too much. Considering this is from one event and the armies people brought, the Metawatch seems to be slightly skewed.

US open Series 2023 2

Last weekend saw the first major tournament using the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 – the Tacoma leg of the US Open Series. Almost 400 players made their way to Washington State in the Pacific Northwest to participate.

This was one of the first times we’ve had a chance to see the new game in action at a large-scale event. Stu from the Warhammer Studio was there as an honorary Lord Solar to oversee proceedings, and we’ve got this interview dispatch from the tournament floor.

So, before we get to who won and all that, they did talk a little about the actual meta, and while we don’t have a graphic for the win rates, they did mention some outliers. GW tries to keep the factions in a 10% ratio, from 45% (on the low end) to 55% (on the high end).

Right now, unfortunately, there are some armies way outside that range. They mention Admech, Blood Angels, Death Guard, and Votann from the low end.

This makes sense as most people foresaw some severe issues with the armies. Then, on the other end of the spectrum, there were Aeldari, Imperial Knights, Genestealer Cults, and Custodes. They mention all of these are either below 45% or above 55%, meaning they either had a great time or a really bad time.

However, with the recent changes to Fate Dice, and the ruling on the Knight’s re-rolls, they don’t seem too worried about Eldar and Imperial Knights. They say they are on the watch list but might not need significant changes.

Now, onto the winners.

10th Edition 40k GW Metawatch

While current popular factions put up a strong showing as expected, some eventualities had not been foreseen – not least the fact that the Adeptus Custodes finished first and second. Their prodigious durability and close-range combat skills gave them a significant edge when wrestling over objectives, and with mortal wounds being a favourite tool in the arsenal of the Aeldari and Imperial Knights, the Custodes’ Aegis of the Emperor detachment ability paid for itself 10 times over.

Custodes took first and second place, which is a bit surprising as most people would have assumed Aeldari or Knights would win. We’ll have to see how the index card changes stir up the factions. But they are trying to make the game balanced around that 45%-55% range.

From the sounds of the interview, there probably won’t be a ton of changes to the strong factions to start, but more focused on raising up the weaker ones. Either way, it’s interesting to see Custodes take the top two spots at the Tacoma Open!
