Games Workshop ends Heresy Thursday just as the Saturnine box and 3rd edition hype builds; here’s what’s still coming—and what isn’t.
Well, that’s one way to build momentum and then slam the brakes.
Games Workshop just confirmed that Heresy Thursday, the weekly beat for Horus Heresy previews, is getting the axe. Right as we’re gearing up for the third edition. Right as the Saturnine box set is about to drop. Right when people are actually paying attention again.
The timing? Odd. The messaging? Mixed. Here is what we think it all means.
“Lots of New Stuff, But Not That Much New Stuff”
In their own words, GW says the schedule just can’t support weekly Heresy previews anymore. That’s fair—weekly releases are a big commitment.
But here’s the kicker: in the same breath, they mention a “substantial schedule of releases” for Horus Heresy, including long-awaited plastic kits like MkII Assault Marines, MkIII Breachers, and the glorious slab of armor that is the Fellblade.
So we’re getting all these kits. Just… not in a way that allows for consistent updates?
Feels a bit like someone throwing you a party, handing you a cupcake, and then reminding you the cake is still frozen.
The Saturnine Box Set: All Eyes Forward
GW has been hyping the Saturnine box set hard. New rules, reworked mechanics, and sleek plastic sprues—everything about it screams “big reset button.” It’s supposed to bring in fresh players and pull back those who drifted after the resin flood of 2.0.
The third edition is shaping up to be a cleaner, more dynamic version of the game. So, cutting off the mainline of communication, right when the community wants more details and previews, is an odd move.
What’s Really Changing?
Here’s what we are getting, according to the official post:
- New plastic kits (and we’ve seen teasers at events like the Dropsite Preview)
- Painting guides
- Lore features
- Tactical breakdowns
- Studio interviews
In short: stuff is still coming, just not on a fixed schedule. You’ll still get your mini fix—you just won’t know when it’s arriving. It’s like waiting for the bus without a timetable. It’ll show up eventually, but don’t bet your hobby night on it.
What This Means for You (Yes, You)
So what’s the move if you’re into Horus Heresy right now?
- Keep an eye on the big drops. Events like Warhammer Fest and Open Day are where the real meat will be now. That’s where the big kits, character reveals, and system updates are likely to appear.
- Community content will carry weight. With GW stepping back from weekly updates, creators, painters, and lore channels are going to pick up the slack. Expect more from YouTube, podcasts, and hobby blogs (and maybe consider contributing your own hot takes).
- Plan your backlog accordingly. With the Saturnine box set coming, it’s a good time to figure out if you’re building Loyalist or Traitor and start prepping for new rules. Even without a weekly drip-feed, you’ve got enough on your plate.
So… Is the Heresy DOA Then?
Not from the looks of it. If anything, it looks like the game is going through a restructuring behind the curtain. Bringing totally new units to the game (like all the Saturnine stuff). Rewriting rules and balancing legions takes time. So while the weekly articles are gone, it’s not a sign the game is on life support.
But it does mean the communication strategy is shifting. Less frequent, more concentrated updates. That might work. It might not.
For now, it’s up to us—the players, painters, and warlords of the 31st Millennium—to keep the momentum going. Because let’s be honest: whether we get a Thursday article or not, we’re still building armies, losing dice rolls, and overcommitting charges just like always.
And if they do drop a plastic Thunderhawk? All will be forgiven.
