Here are all the new Chapter approved Warhammer 40k rules updates, points changes, missions, and Secondary Objectives in the CA GT 2022 book.
We originally saw some of the new changes to Warhammer 40k missions and secondary objectives updates at the US Open Finals. Since then we’ve seen rules and points leaks, a new Chapter Approved GT 2022 book, changes to secondaries, and the introduction of seasons for Warhammer 40k.
Update: The new Chapter Approved 2023 Arks of Omen Grand Tournament Mission Pack is coming with rules updates, points changes, and Secondary Objectives! Find Out More HERE
So that will be a big change to how new and existing Warhammer 40k rules are balanced and how many updates you will have to keep up with as a player.
Keep in mind before July of 2020 the rules updates in the Chapter Approved book were published in December of each year, so technically hobbyists already bought TWO Chapter Approved books within six months of each other from Dec 2019 to July 2020. Now, that will be the norm.
Speaking of which looks like for the second half of 2022 we have the new Chapter Approved: Nephilim to buy…

All The Chapter Approved 2022 40k Rules, Missions & Points
Here’s the most up-to-date review of the new Chapter Approved 2022 Rules. Click on the gallery above to see the new Battleforged and Seconadries rules plus Missions!
One of the biggest changes found inside the book is easily the CP changes. If you missed it, GW also put out an image that clearly lays out the change…
Perhaps the biggest shift comes with Command points. Players now start each battle with half as many as before – three for Incursions and six for Strike Force battles. What’s more, there are no freebies in Nephilim – players must now also pay a Command point for their first Warlord Trait and Relic, using two new Core Requisition Stratagems.
If you build your list as before and get one Warlord Trait and one Relic (not including extra traits or relics), you’ll be starting the game with 4 CP which is a huge rule change for matched play Warhammer 40k.
Compared to the current system is just insane as you’ll have a 3rd of what you could have now. This also forces players to build their lists around more troops (in theory).
Either way, it’s happening and might really reduce alpha strikes and make the games longer as you’ll get more points throughout the game.
It might be better for new players as instead of constantly having to search through their book for stratagems, they just won’t have the CP to do it.
Determining missions has changed slightly, but for the most part, everything here is the same. One nice change to balance out the starting CP nerf is that you can get a free Super Heavy Auxilarly if the faction keyword matches your warlord (except for Imperium, Aeldari, Chaos, or Tyranids)!
Step 10 (Reserves and Transports) sees a pretty big change! Transports MUST have at least one model inside them. If they do not, the model is treated as destroyed after deployment. This is mostly targeted at Wave Serpents and Raiders perhaps, but shouldn’t be too much of a hurdle.
Playing and ending the game is pretty much exactly the same.
Also a side note, this book contains the core rules in the back, which is super convenient in case anything needs to be double-checked!
All the New Warhammer 40k Chapter Approved Missions
The first looks also seem to indicate the missions in the new Nephilim GT book are the same as the ones from Nachmund, below.
Terrain Set-Ups & Explanation of Types:
Terrain Piece 1 elements will almost always be “true” line-of-sight blocking pieces (i.e. obstructed windows, solid walls, few lines of sight drawable through the physical terrain pieces themselves).
For Terrain Piece 2 elements, the opposite is true – the physical terrain elements are themselves quite porous, so while Obscuring makes the entire piece line-of-sight blocking, this benefit largely dissipates once your units enter the terrain.
The Best NERF Guns To Buy: Pricing & Availability
For Terrain Piece 3 elements, the terrain will be fairly broken up, reflecting their Dense Cover rules.
They also added an interesting note on objective placement for terrain:
A Note on Objective Placement: For the US Open events, following the guideline of the Grand Tournament Mission Pack 2021, no Objectives may be placed on any of the physical terrain elements. However, there is an “otherwise noted” caveat that they may end up on top of the area-terrain bases for some elements in certain missions. Where this occurs, it has been considered in the overall terrain layout and selection of mission/deployment according to layout.
Mission 1:
Mission 2:
In this mission, you really want to get into your enemy’s zone and blow up your explosives! The more explosives you can have in your opponent’s zone, you’ll rack up the points at the end.
Mission 3:
This has a cool mechanic that you actually can control objective markers even if you aren’t in range with a unit. Obviously, it can still be taken by the enemy, but just very interesting for fast armies.
Mission 4:
This mission is all about taking the center of the table and destroying your opponent there!
Mission 5:
A lot of the new missions are focused on getting objectives in the other player’s zone. Then, you only get CP if your Warlord is on the table, don’t let them die!
Mission 6:
Scanning objectives is nothing new, so this feels like a fairly standard mission.
Mission 7:
This is another mission all about getting into your opponent’s zone and taking the objectives away from them! Just remember though, you only get CP if you control an objective in your own zone.
Mission 8:
This one is all about destroying your enemy and grabbing as many objective markers as you can!
Mission 9:
All the New 40k Grand Tournament 2022 Secondary Objectives (secondaries) Nephilim
We cleaned up the new product preview image from GW and you can clearly see who is getting what, along with the overall table of contents as well.
First up, secondary objectives have received an overhaul. No more flipping between books – all the secondary objectives you can pick from are revised and collated here. That includes faction-specific objectives – there are even secondary objectives for factions that haven’t yet received their newest codex, such as the bold Astra Millitarum or frenzied World Eaters. Each player starts with three generic secondary objectives – Assassination, Grind Them Down, and Behind Enemy Lines – which they can swap out ahead of deployment. Another change – there are no limits when it comes to faction secondary objectives. If you want to pick two objectives specific to your faction, or even all three, go right ahead – so long as they’re all from a different category.
So it looks like there will be about 40 pages of new Secondary Objectives, followed by another 40 or so pages of missions, etc.
There is every major faction and sub-faction in the game listed, so while we’ve included them all for you to check out, we will only break down some of the biggest players.
Here are the ones for the Imperium:
A few minor tweaks happened here, but nothing too insane.
Black Templars see a few nice changes which will hopefully help them out.
Death From Above got a bit easier to score and is possible to get a solid 5 VP in a turn, making for a decent update to the option.
Dark Angels saw some NERFs, but overall they probably aren’t too big and should still be pretty comparable to the past.
Deathwatch didn’t have many great options before and for the most part that’s still sadly true.
Imperial Fists and Iron Hands saw a single adjustment each.
Raven Guard and Salamanders both saw a single adjustment.
Most of the Space Wolves’ options are much better than before, so hopefully, the faction sees a nice boost in viability.
White Scars got one option, but it is insanely strong. There’s a mix of VPs for killing on the charge, killing after advancing with shots, and killing a character or monster after charging.
The great thing about this is you’ll already be doing all of this naturally with a White Scars list, making this a very easy choice for players.
Sisters see a nice boost here with Slay the Heretic getting simplified allowing for shots throughout a turn to score VP and allowing multiple weapon types to score points simultaneously.
Defend the Shrine also got better now that you can choose the obj to mark for the mission, making for an easy 9-12 points in most missions.
Custodes lost Stranglehold and To the Last, so hopefully their new tweaked options are good enough.
Unfortunately, Ad Mech didn’t get much help in the secondary department.
The imperial guard got a suite of new options, all of which seem a little bit interesting to test out.
Imperial Knights are mostly unchanged.
Grey Knights saw minor adjustments but are mostly the same.
List of 40k Chapter Approved Chaos Secondary Objectives
The 3 big options for any CSM list seem ok for the most part.
Alpha Legion and Black Legion both have one option, but the Alpha Legion one is incredibly on theme and even better looks decent to use.
Creations of Bile and Emperor’s Children also have one option a piece.
Iron Warriors and Nightlords each have a single option in the book.
Red Corsairs and Word Bearers each saw a single adjustment.
World Eaters got a single option in the book.
Death Guard got some better secondaries, which most likely means they got a boost in competitive play. Fleeing Vectors and Spread the Sickness are both much better now!
The Thousand Sons saw two big changes with a large nerf to Wrath of Magnus and a buff of relatively equal size to Sorcerous Prowess making for a hopefully equally good faction that could contend with the top dogs.
With the removal of Stranglehold, the Chaos Knight’s Ruthless Tyranny is looking like a much better option!
Chaos Daemons get a full three options.
List of 40k Chapter Approved Xenos Secondary Objectives
Eldar didn’t see too many changes here.
Dark Eldar saw improvements to both Purge the Enemy options and got a nerf to Herd the Prey which was pretty warranted.
Harlequins were good and will continue to be as they saw a few buffs in their secondary options.
Even though Tyranids got their codex recently, Cranial Feasting actually got a pretty significant buff here!
All Genestealer Cults options saw improvement!
Necrons also saw some buffs across the board!
Orks saw a few changes, but are mostly improved.
Tau is more or less unchanged.
Chapter Approved Grand Tournament 2022 Points Changes
It looks like all the new Chapter Approved Points changes have leaked in the 40k app already, but dont forget there will be a free PDF download accessible for everyone upon release of the book on June 25th, 2022.
Long-time competitive players will notice that the Munitorum Field Manual is absent – fear not! This season brings with it our first free points update. The entire points update document will be available to download in a digital format from this very website, so players who want the latest points changes for their matched play games will have free and easy access.
There are a ton of threads going with everyone chiming in about various faction updates. The first one below for Space Marines comes from Reddit.
However keep in mind these have not been verified, and the complete list of Chapter Approved 2022 Warzone Nephilim points changes are available for download now.
