It’s official: Games Workshop confirmed that female Adeptus Custodes exist in Warhammer 40k lore and have been there since the beginning!
While Female Space Marines are still a hotly debated topic, people very quickly picked up on a little snippet of lore in the new Adeptus Custodes Codex that featured a female Custodes. It has stirred some controversy amid an already-panned codex release, but unlike the other debates, we have 100% confirmation from GW on this one.
Games Workshop Confirms Female Adeptus Custodes in Warhammer 40k
The new codex hasn’t been the best received due to the rules, but as we’ve said before, it’s hard to judge a book without playing it, and if it is that bad, GW will quickly make changes… Anyway, the book has plenty of lore and background stories about the army. One initially caught everyone’s attention, but there are actually two in the book about female Custodes.
On pages 14-15 of the new 10th Edition book, there is a full story about the female Custodes named Calladayce. The full story is below, but this is the first codex book to discuss female Adeptus Custodes explicitly.
The story is quite interesting, but it seems people don’t care about the Blood Games at all; they are only focused on genders.
Official Confirmation
Games Workshop has since confirmed that this is official and that female custodes are now canon in Warhammer 40k.
Well, there you have it—not only are there female Custodes, but they have been there since the first Ten Thousand! A few years back, a GW writer also weighed in on the issue and discussed why we hadn’t seen them before from a design standpoint.
GW Write Spoke Out About Female Custodes
From an old Reddit thread titled: “It’s International Women’s Day! So: how are we feeling about the representation of women in Warhammer 40,000 today?” ADB had a lot to say in 2019 about why there were no Female Adeptus Custodes.
So, it seems that GW was against the idea because the models that were ready for sale were all male. However, as ADB stated back then, there was nothing in the lore against it (he even had the opportunity to write it in), and it seems like a rare moment when the higher-ups make this kind of distinction.
Community Reaction
The reactions come from Twitter/X.
Well, people have quite a reaction to the story, and some even say they will no longer be collecting.
Thor is quite mad over the whole thing and says he will stop supporting after collecting 50k points. It seems like some people are just not on board with the idea, but not everyone has had such a bad reaction.
They bring up a good point here: no one really cared about changing squats to Votann (and adding plenty of female models as well) or breaking the C’Tans into shards.
Something about Space Marines and Adeptus Custodes models not being male seems to get quite a response from some folks.
If you’ve been collecting this long, are you going to let a change like this stop you from playing and collecting? Not Walter.
Either way, the confirmation of female Adeptus Custodes in Warhammer 40k lore has stirred up some controversy but has also opened new doors for representation in the game. Games Workshop has made it clear that they are the ones who ultimately decide the lore and background of each faction, and the addition of female Custodes may have been long overdue.
While some in the community may not be on board with the change, it is important to remember that inclusivity and representation are crucial in today’s world. With this new development, we may see more diverse representation in future Warhammer releases.
