See every 40k Emperor’s Champion model from classic metal minis to the new Primaris hero in this full look at how this Black Templars icon has evolved.
The Emperor’s Champion model has been around since the days of metal minis and questionable paint pots, carrying the banner for Black Templarsacross every edition of Warhammer 40k. From that first chunky sculpt to the modern Primaris powerhouse, the Champion’s look has kept pace with the hobby’s glow-up.
Let’s check out every version that’s charged across the tabletop in the Emperor’s name.
Bayard’s Revenge: The New Emperor’s Champion Model
Originally published in August 2021. Updated on October 17th, 2025, by Rob Baer with the information.
Games Workshop dropped a killer update for Warhammer Day 2022 with Bayard’s Revenge. This one shows the Emperor’s Champion in his natural habitat, finishing off a very unlucky Ork Nob, pulled straight from classic 40k artwork. The sculpt is clean, the pose is dramatic, and it’s dripping with Black Templar attitude.
The 40k Emperor’s Champion model went up for preorder on October 8th, 2022, and hit stores later that month. Between the ornate armor and cinematic base, it’s got everything you’d want from a centerpiece mini. Ork players might hate it, but let’s be honest, it’s a showstopper.
The Forgotten Emperor’s Champion Model (3rd Edition)
Back in the late ’90s, the first Emperor’s Champion model arrived with 3rd Edition 40k, and it’s still one of the most recognizable Space Marine sculptsever made. That pose with the sword raised high? Iconic.
This version came in metal and carried all the gothic energy that defined early Black Templars. You can still grab some of these on eBay, usually for less than you’d expect. For many players, this is the classic look for the Emperor’s Champion.
The Firstborn Emperor’s Champion
Before Primaris Marines took over the spotlight, this Firstborn Emperor’s Champion model was the main man on tabletops for years. He wasn’t the biggest model around, but he had the swagger that made up for it. The sculpt screamed “holy vengeance,” and it gave players that perfect crusader centerpiece for their Black Templar forces.
Even now, the Firstborn model holds up surprisingly well next to newer releases. It’s a nostalgic favorite that still packs plenty of tabletop presence, just in a slightly shorter package.
Sigismund: The First Emperor’s Champion Model
Forge World gave us Sigismund in 2015, the man from the Imperial Fists who started it all for the Black Templars. Lore-wise, he’s the original God Emperor’s Champion, wielding the Black Sword during the Horus Heresy and carving through traitors like a chainsword through wet paper.
The model itself is pure Forge World goodness: heroic stance, ancient armour of faith, and a weapon that looks like it’s ready to ruin someone’s day. It’s still one of the sharpest takes on the Emperor’s Champion concept and a favorite among collectors.
The Primaris Emperor’s Champion Model in Warhammer 40k
Fast forward to 2021, and the Black Templars finally got a Primaris Emperor’s Champion model worthy of their legacy. The sculpt keeps the classic 3rd Edition vibe but updates everything with cleaner lines, better proportions, and that modern Space Marine bulk.
The design team clearly wanted to pay respect to the old pose while giving it new life for current players. The armor’s packed with details, from purity seals to ornate trim, and it looks right at home leading a fresh crusade across the tabletop.
The new version might be bigger and flashier, but it still feels like the same Champion, just ready to hit harder and stand taller.
